Laser / Lidar speed measuring devices that are used to issue laser / lidar speeding tickets, utilize a method of an invisible (infrared) light beam (similar to your TV remote) that has various beam widths, which depends on the specific laser unit. The operator activates the unit at a moving target (vehicle). The unit emits a light beam with a known frequency, in the infrared range of the spectrum. The beam strikes the target and is reflected back to the unit with a designated time / frequency. The unit's microprocessor calculates the time difference, which is known as d t and the difference in distance d d. The laser / lidar unit's final calculation is velocity (v = d d/d t; d: distance). It bears mentioning that the Greek symbol "d " is defined as the difference (X2 - X1). The officer observed the target vehicle (yours / defendant) and reads the speed display of the laser/ lidar unit.
The operator performs a series of tests, which may assist the operator in determining if the Laser / Lidar unit is operating. Secondly, the operator should be trained in the proper use of the device. Thirdly, a traffic history may also be needed, in the general area.
Police Officers that issue laser speeding tickets / violations are "Experts" in the operation of these aforementioned devices. Logically the best defense, of course if your innocent is to retain an "Expert Witness" in this exact field. Remember you would not hire a plumber to perform open-heart surgery, obtain the right expert.
It bears mentioning that some laser / lidar / speed-measuring devices are only accurate, if used properly, to issue the laser / lidar speeding ticket.
Save your hard-earned money - don't hire another type of expert. Whoever you retain, if any, ask them a few questions:
1. What is your success rate for speeding ticket / violations?
2. What type of field investigation(s) are you going to perform?
3. Other than a court show, what evidence are you going to present in court, on the date of my trial?
On a closing note, put yourself in the judge's position, everyone claims they're "Not Guilty", the key is to prove it - Good Luck!!
